   In "Talking Face to Face", learn how to inform and talk about announcements, notices and posters. The focus is on the patterns that are appropriate for giving information concerning announcements and posters for different social activities and recreations.
   In "Maintaining a Sharp Eye", master the key words and structures and learn the way foreign people celebrate holidays, particularly in the Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. You can know some customs in their holidays by reading through passage I; learn and experience the life in American by reading through passage II.

   Notice and announcement
   1. Warm- up:
   1. Why do people write and put up notices?
   2. Do you know how to write a notice in English?
   (1) What is an announcement?
   An announcement is a statement in spoken or written form that makes sth known.
   An engraved or printed formal statement or notice
   (2) What is a notice?
   A notice is a piece of paper written or printed news or information, usu. displayed publicly
   (3) What is a poster?
   A large, usually printed placard, bill, or announcement, often illustrated, that is posted to advertise or publicize something.
   Notices are often used to give information about social activities. They are brief and to the point. The following aspects should be made clear when writing a notice: the informed person or audience; the subject matter; the time; the place and the things that need to be noticed, etc.

   Applied writing: Notice书面通知
   书面通知的一般格式如下:
   1.书面通知正文上面正中,往往用NOTICE一词。
   2.正文表述可采用叙述形式。也可以用广告形式突出某个部分(如主题、人物、时间、地点)。文字力求简明扼要,一个句子可分为几行书写,分行书写时,尽量居中,各行的第一个字母须大写。
   3.通知发布日期一般写在正文的左下角(在落款的下一行)或右上角(在notice的下一行)。
   4.发布通知的主事部门或主事人。一般写在正文后的右下角,也可写在NOTICE的正上方。

   A: Mr. Smith, could you give me some advice on how to write a poster for the English party?
   B: Sure. First, you have to give a clear idea of the event, the place and time of it.
   A: It's on 7:30 p.m., May 5. And we'll have it in the Students Center.
   B: Good. And you also need to make it look attractive, something hot and cool.
   A: So I'll put in it that you are the leading character of a play.
   B: Aha! OK, if you think that helps.
   A: Perhaps I'll also stress the benefit it will bring to our English learning.
   B: Good idea. And you can draw a picture, or use different fonts (字型) and colors to highlight the effect.
