Para. 3 The turkeys soon learned that shortly after I called the cats, I spread the corn onto the snow. All the toms and hens would come running from the woods whenever they heard me. And they were not the only ones. The white-tailed deer and the crows also thought that “Kitty, kitty, kitty” meant “Soup’s on!” So whenever I called the cats, we would have forty turkeys, fifteen deer and numerous crows munching in the yard.
shortly after
在……之后不久在after的前面可以加上时间副词,如soon after, not long ,after, the day after, the year after等。
e.g.
a. Soon/Shortly/Not long after he came back from the US, he moved to live in Wales.
他从美国回来不久,就搬到威尔士去住了。

b. Once you’ve purchased the washing machine we guarantee it for up to 5 years after.

spread
vt. 撒;展开, 铺开
e.g.
a. She spread her toys all over the room.
她把玩具撒得满屋子都是。
b. The trees spread their branches over the house.

e.g.
On the following days rumors were still spreading.

whenever
conj. 不管什么时候, 每当,通常引导让步状语从句。
e.g.
a. I will see you whenever you like.
你愿意什么时候,我就什么时候去看你。
b. Whenever he stayed home in the evening, he went to bed early.
每当他晚上在家,他就早早上床睡觉。
crow
n. 乌鸦
e.g.
a. Crows cawed from the poplar trees overhead.
白杨树上的乌鸦在上空呱呱乱叫。
b. A crow is never the whiter for washing herself often.
乌鸦不管怎样经常洗澡,也不会变白。
numerous
adj. 无数的,大量的
e.g.
a. There are numerous people in the square.
有许多人在广场上。
b. Numerous men fell under the spell of her beauty.
无数男人为她的美貌倾倒。
Translation
Para. 3 火鸡们很快就明白,我呼唤过猫咪们后就会在雪地上撒些玉米。无论何时只要听到我的叫声,所有的公火鸡母火鸡就都会从树林里冲出来。他们可不是唯一等着喂食的动物。白尾鹿和乌鸦也认为“猫咪······猫咪······猫咪”就等于“开饭啦!”, 因此只要我呼唤猫咪,就会有40 只火鸡、15 头鹿和数不清的乌鸦在我家院子里大吃大喝。
