    How the Picture Changes

    Para. 1 My wife and I first met in a supermarket—and fell in like at once. I saw an angel. She saw a knight. In the weeks and months that followed, it became obvious that we were a perfect match.

    Para. 2a We each put our best foot forward. I wrote her poetry, bought her flowers, and gaveher such tenderness that I surprised even me. She laughed at my jokes, shed tears of joy, and whispered sweet nothings in my ear for hours.Whatever she liked I suddenly liked. Whatever I wanted, she wanted too.

    Para. 2b She pretended to enjoy my jokes and my driving. I pretended to enjoy holding handsand window-shopping. Nothing was too much trouble. We were meant to be together.

    angel

    put one’s best foot forward

    Whatever she liked I suddenly liked. Whatever I wanted, she wanted too. (Para. 2)

    whatever... = no matter what..., 不管什么······，引导让步状语从句。
    e.g.

    6. We were meant to be together. (Para. 2)

    be meant (to do): 必须（做）；应该（做）
    e.g.
    a. This restaurant is meant to be the best in the area.

    b. It seems that they were meant to be enemies.
    他们似乎注定是敌人。
    c. You were meant to ask why I was disappointed with the idea.
