I am a morning person. I have always enjoyed rising early, making a pot of coffee, getting the newspaper, and settling down for an hour of quiet time—which I call a time-out.

退役之后,这位老人在家乡定居。
time-out: 合成名词,意思是:“(工作等活动中的)暂停时间,休息时间;(球类等比赛进行中的)暂停 ”

a. It’s very hot. You’d better take a time-out from work to have a sip of tea.
天气很热,你最好乘工间休息喝口茶。
b. The coach called for a time-out from the match.
教练要求比赛暂停。

1. When I was a child, I remember my mother using time-outs as punishment.
译文:

2. However, even then, I enjoyed going to my room to think about how I was behaving and what I needed to do “to be a good boy”.

3. I enjoyed my time-out then, and I still do, although now I consider a time-out to be a reward rather than a punishment.

此句中,do是代替词。为避免重复,do用来替代前一个分句中的enjoy my time-out。
例如:

e.g.
a. The fireman was offered a reward of $100 for saving the child’s life, but he declined it.

b. The prize was a just reward for all your hard work.
奖品是你辛苦工作应得的报酬。
rather than:“不是······而是”, 往往连接两个完全对等的语法结构,可接名词、代词、形容词、不定式、分词、介词短语等。
e.g.
a. Since Tom should be responsible for the accident, I think it’s him, rather than you, that is to blame.
既然汤姆应该对此事故负责,我认为该受责备的是他,而不是你。
b. She is modest rather than shy.
她是谦虚而不是害羞。
c. Tom decided to stay at home rather than go to the cinema.
汤姆决定不去看电影呆在家里。
d. He insisted on having the old house renovated rather than knocked down.
他坚持把老房子整修一下而不是拆除。
e. She always depends on herself rather than on her parents to overcome difficulties.
她总是依靠自己而不是父母来克服困难。
注意:would rather...than “宁愿, 与其······不如······”
e.g.
I would rather play basketball than football.
我宁愿打篮球而非踢足球。
