Getting
around in Singapore is easy and inexpensive. Excellent bus services
complement one of the world's most modern and efficient Mass Rapid
Transit (MRT) systems. Visitors can purchase a Singapore Explorer
ticket for use on buses, at $5 for a one day pass of $12 for a three
day pass. The bus guide and a map of Singapore should be sufficient
for you to carry out a little bit of exploring on your own. Taxis
are metered and air conditioned. Self drive and chauffeur driven
cars can also be hired from a number of operators.
The best way to experience the Singaporean
way of life is to take in its sights, sounds and smells first hand;
and one of the best ways of doing this is to take a self guided
tour of our ethnic quarters and thematic district. Using the 'Yours
to Explore' guides which feature
ethnic and thematic areas like Chinatown, Little
India, Kampung Glam, the Singapore River and Orchard Road, you can
immerse
yourself into the daily lifestyle of the locals. The maps will guide
you on a walking tour through the area, explaining landmarks and
unique practices. You will be introduced to streets where time has
stood still since the 1950s, learn about local superstitions as
well as see exotic items being sold at modern, air conditioned department
stores. The 'Yours to Explore' guides can be picked up from your
nearest Singapore Tourism Board International Office, from the Singapore
Changi Airport (upon arrival in Singapore) or from the Singapore
Tourism Board's Information Center at Raffles Hotel
When the sun goes down, the
fun continues in Singapore with all kinds of entertainment ranging
from classical symphonies, to
Chinese street operas, jazz to theatre and rock to the latest Hollywood
movies. Cinemas in and around the city center show everything from
the latest Hollywood blockbusters and art films to Chinese dramas.
There are also many cineplexes and multiplexes featuring 5 to 10
movies at any time. The array of pubs, bars, discos and karaoke
lounges is equally exciting and can be found in surprising corners
of the city like old shop houses and warehouses, in addition to
shopping malls and hotels.
Cuisine from all over the world
converge
in Singapore. In addition to the several unique local dishes which
have evolved
through the fusion of the different ethic cooking styles, Singapore
also offers an array of Western cuisine. From five star restaurants
to outdoor eating stalls there are well over 20, 000 eating establishments
in Singapore, including vegetarian and halal outlets. The difficulty
would be deciding what to eat rather than finding a place to eat.
