Text A    The Caribbean
Not far away (nothing is far away in Bermuda…) is one of the island’s best loved and most individual hotels –GLENCOE. More like a home really – should you be so lucky. It sits right on the edge of the celebrated Great Sound and everyone of its rooms is different. You’re right Bermuda’s not the Caribbean but a delight in itself.
Martinique – where Napoleon’s Josephine was born and Cole Porter composed ‘Begin the Beguine’ – is French of course. Here, right across the great bay facing Fort-de-France (all those duty-free shops…) is the Bakoua Beach Hotel, private beach, huge terrace, swimming pool and lots of evening entertainment. Don’t even ask about the food. It’s French and yummy.
Some Caribbean islands have mini-satellites of their own. Like Antigua. Just offshore is LONG ISLAND. It is in its own, a beautiful private world-acres of it with secluded beaches, coral reefs and lots of green grass leading to pink sand. Here you are on your own – no strangers. One could get used to it.
As for Barbados (little England out West with the sun on), it needs no introduction. Here, the newest resort is HEYWOODS and with over 300 rooms it may seem a bit big. Not really. The rooms are spread about into seven buildings, each with its own architecture, its own style and its own restaurant. Lots of variety. Super beach too. COLONY CLUB has been going a long time – very successfully too and it deserves it. Rooms and suites either face the incomparable beach or the lush gardens. Cool, casual but with an aura of good living. One could hardly do better.
Up the road (they say up the beach in Barbados) is COBBLERS’COVE, one of the best loved hotels in the islands – British-owned and British-run. Here you have two rooms for the price of one – indoors and outdoors and you glide in and out as the mood takes you. Splendid furnishings, lost of space, nice gardens and a very convivial bar. That’s it. The Caribbean. It is what you had always promised yourself. Go now, next month. You will never be the same person again.
