For
many years the majority of resort hotels were seasonally operated
and thus open for either the summer or the winter season. Today, however,
the
trend is
for resorts to operate year-round. Many resorts have found the expense
of remaining open during the “off season” to be lower than the
cost of closing down, maintenance, reopening, and often, recruiting
many new staff members.
The resort hotel caters to vacationers and recreation-minded people.
Usually located at the shore, in the mountains, or at a spa,
a resort is free of
the large city clamor but is still easily accessible by plane, train,
or automobile. Both summer and winter resorts offer the usual hotel
service, but because their clientele is made up principally of vacationers,
they must provide guest entertainment. The resort guest, however,
expects to be treated as a member of the family and to be completely
entertained right on the premises. |
