The residential hotel is found principally in the United States. Many
Americans early developed the habit of living permanently in hotels,
and this branch of the industry
evolved primarily
to provide for these individuals. Essentially, a residential hotel
is an apartment building offering maid service, a dining room, room
meal service, and possibly a cocktail lounge. The food and beverage
department is usually small and exists more as a convenience for the
residents than as a true source of income, some residential hotels
lease
their food and beverage area to an outside catering organization.
Residential hotels
range from
the luxurious, offering full suites for families, to the moderate,
offering single rooms for either young men or young women. Although they represent only a segment of the industry, these hotels nevertheless perform an important function in the American way of life. . |
