1.glove [^lQv] n. 手套= a fitted covering for the hand with a separate sheath for each finger and the thumb

        It’s not polite to shake hands with the glove on.

2.jeweller [ `dVU:ElE] n. 珠宝商=trader in jewels

        She married a jeweller.

1.be in trouble 遇到麻烦了

        The only thought she’s got is to get away from this embarrassing occasion.

Notes

(1) old gold: old objects or jewellery made of gold

(2) gold pieces: pieces of gold 许多金饰品

(3) He soon had more than enough: He soon had even more than he needed.

(4) He was white with fear: His face became white because of fear.

(5) The thought of returning filled him with fear: He was frightened by the thought of having to go back to the house for his glove.

(6) The rest of his life in prison: He would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Translation

1. He could even think coolly of the dead man he had left in the house.

        当他想起他留在房子里的那具死尸,他居然很镇静。

2. Dunne knew this because as a jeweller he often bought old gold and melted it down.

        邓恩知道斯特朗有些值钱的旧金器,因为他是一个珠宝商,经常收购这些东西,然后把它们重新回炉。

3. He hardly thought before he used it.

        “not/hardly … before”表示“尚未……就,刚……就”的意思:

5. Then he thought of prison. The rest of his life in prison. This thought made him go out into the street again.

6. He thought he saw strange shapes at every corner. Once he nearly screamed at a piece of paper on the ground. For a moment it had looked like a dead body.
