lie

(v.): (lay, lain, lying)
1) be at rest on something; rest flat on a surface 躺，平放
1. I’m not used to lying in bed after waking up.
醒来后我不习惯躺在床上。
2. When I feel ill, I’ll lie in bed for a while.
每当我身体不舒服时，我就躺在床上休息一会儿。
2) be situated 位于，在于
1. The famous river lies between two mountains. 这条著名的河流位于两座山之间。
2. The town lies on the coast. 该城位于海边。
lie (v.): (lied, lied, lying) make an untrue statement 说谎
1. He lied about his income. 他谎报收入。
2. She lied about her age to get married. 她为了结婚谎报了年龄。
lie (n.): intentionally false statement 谎话，假话
1. This is nothing but a pack of lies. 这纯粹是一派胡言。
2. His story is nothing but a pack of lies. 他说的纯粹是一派鬼话。
more expressions with ‘lie’:
to lie on one’s back 仰卧
to lie on one’s side 侧卧
take sth lying down 甘受(挫败等)
Comparing the following words: lie, lay
lie: 不及物动词，意为“处于，位于，躺下”。它的过去式、过去分词和现在分词形式分别为：lay, lain, lying。作“说谎”解时，其过去式和过去分词形式都是 lied, 现在分词形式为lying。
lay: 意为“放在某个面上”。其过去式和过去分词形式都是laid, 现在分词形式为laying。
1. She laid her skirt on the bed to keep it neat.
她把裙子放在床上以保持平整。
2. He laid his hand on my shoulder.
他把手放在我的肩上。

extend(v.)

1) make (sth.) longer or larger (in space or time) 伸长，延长，延展
1. We plan to extend a garden. 我们要扩建一个花园。
2. Can you extend your visit a few days longer? 你能多停留几天吗？
2) lay or stretch out (the body or limp) at full length 伸展，舒展（肢体）
1. The girl extended her arms horizontally. 那女孩双臂平伸。
2. The bird extended its wings in flight. 那鸟展翅飞翔。
Comparing the following words:
extend, lengthen, prolong, stretch 均可以表示增长、扩展等意思。
extend (v.): make (sth.) longer or larger (in space or time) 伸长，延长，延展
表示空间、土地或时间等方面的扩展或延续，也可以表示将某事物延伸到所期望的地步，还可以表示将身体的某个部位尽可能地伸展开来。
1.The hot weather extended into October.
炎热的天气一直持续到十月份。
2.They will extend their visit for a few days longer.
他们要把访问时间延长几天。
lengthen (v.): (cause sth. to) become longer （使某物）变长指将某一事物的长度或持续时间延长，而不包括宽度的增加。
1. The days start to lengthen in March. 三月份白昼开始变长。
2. I will lengthen a skirt. 我要把裙子放长。
prolong (v.): make sth. longer, esp. in time; extend 延长（尤指时间），使延伸
指空间上的延长、伸展，更多地是表示时间上的延长，含有超过了自然的或正常的限度之意。
1. They prolonged their visit by a few days. 他们把访问时间延长了几天。
2.? Some drugs can help to prolong life. 有些药物可延年益寿。
stretch (v.): be able to become longer, wider etc. 能伸展，能延伸
用处较广，指将事物的长度延长，也指将事物的宽度加宽，也可以表示某种规定或时间超出了所规定的范围和限度。
1. The forests stretched for hundreds of miles. 森林绵延数百英里。
2. The meeting stretched over three hours. 会议连续开了3个多小时。
