Meaning: This sentence shows the negative reaction of the students towards learning.
而年轻人却嘲笑这种责任,并且竭尽全力抵抗这种必须要做的事情。
sneer:
(1)(v.)to show contempt by means of a derisive smile 嘲笑;讥讽
1.Don’t sneer at those humble people. 不要嘲笑出身低微的人。
2.They always sneer at his shortcomings. 他们总是嘲笑他的短处。
(2) (n.)sneering look,smile,word 讥讽的表情,言辞,微笑
1.I can not bear the sneer on his face.
我无法忍受他脸上那讥讽的神情。
2.You should neglect their sneers at your efforts.
你不应理会他们对你努力所作的嘲笑。
Comparison: resist,insist,and persist
resist: (v.)to oppose or to keep oneself back from 抵抗;忍住;不屈服
1.He could resist no longer. 他再也无法抗拒了。
2.She can not resist chocolates. 她一看巧克力就忍不住想吃。
insist: (v.) to declare that a purpose can not be changed 坚持;坚决主张
1.I insisted that he should cone with us. 我坚持他与我们同去。
2.I insist on your being there. 我坚持要你在那里。
persist: to refuse ,in spite of argument,opposition,failure,etc to make any change in(what one is doing, one’s belief, etc) 坚持;固持己见
1.She persists in wearing that old-fashioned hat.
她坚持要戴那顶旧式的帽子。
2.He persists in his argument in spite of my opposition.
尽管我反对,可他还是坚持己见。
For too many of us, learning appears to be a surrender of our own will to external direction, a sort of enslavement.
Meaning:It seems that students are forced to learn against their own will, To allow the orders to get control of themselves. Learning , in this sense, is a miserable experience to them and they become the sufferer and the slave of learning.
对于我们许多人来说,学习似乎是让我们的意志去屈从于外来的指挥,是去受某种奴役。
appear:
(1) (v.) to come into view, to become visible 出现;呈现
1.The ship appeared on the horizon. 船出现在水平线上。
2.He did not appear at last. 最终他还是没有出现。
(2) to seem 似乎;显得好像
1.She appeared to be very sad. 她看上去好像很伤心。
2.There appeared to have been a mistake. 看起来曾有错误。
