ultimatum:
a warning that you give to someone which states that they must accept certain conditions or act in a particular way, otherwise you will take action against them. 最后通牒。
1. An ultimatum has been issued to him to withdraw his troops from our territory. 向他提交的最后通牒,要求他把部队撤出我国领土。
2. He gave his daughter an ultimatum: unless she stopped taking drugs he would throw her out of the house.
他给女儿下了最后通牒:她要是不戒毒,他就把她从家里赶出去。
Although there was a good reason for Sam’s chronic tardiness---
Meaning: Someone in his family was seriously ill, and that was the reason he was late for work. But he knew that excuse wouldn’t be accepted any more.
虽然塞姆对接连不断的迟到总有个绝妙的理由……
chronic tardiness :
being late for work often. 迟到。
by-now-familiar excuse:
excuse that is familiar to everyone. 大家听惯了的理由。
His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down with a dismissal speech rehearsed.
Meaning: His supervisor was probably already walking back and forth, practicing what he would say to fire his employee.
他的上司可能正踱来踱去练习解雇他时要说的话呢。

“I’m Sam Maynard. I’m applying for a job which I understand became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?”
Meaning: Does the first person who applies for it get the job? Since I am the first applicant, will I therefore be hired? “The early bird gets the worm”, is an old English proverb meaning: “the one who comes first gets whatever it is that he is trying to get.”

Meaning: The boss tried to hold back his smiling before anyone could see that he thought it was funny.

1.Clamp it onto the edge of the table. 把这个东西夹在桌子的边上。
2.The police are clamping down on speeders. 警察正在严厉取缔违法超速驾驶者。
