Since tourism is the movement of people, it is imperative to clarify
the definition of tourism. In 1981, the definition was formulated
by the International Conference on Leisure-Recreation-Tourism. It
was as follows: “Tourism may be defined
in terms of
particular activities selected by choice and undertaken outside the
home environment. Tourism may or may not involve overnight stays away
from home.”
Although academics have debated
conceptual definitions of tourism for several decades, and there
are international agreements on statistical definitions, it was not
until 1991~1992 that the WTO endorsed the following statement: “Tourism
comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places
outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive
year for leisure, business and other purposes.”
Still, there seems to be room
for improvement if one compares this definition with the earlier definition.
Perhaps this leaves us a chance to use the definitions mentioned above
and reword them. Then tourism may be defined as: the sum of the phenomena
and relationships arising from the activities of persons traveling
to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more
than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes,
in so far as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected
with any occupation remunerated from within the country visited. Tourism
may or may not involve overnight stays away from home. |
