One
of the most beautiful lakes in China, West Lake is situated between
subtle mountains and the graceful downtown area of Hangzhou. It is
a mirror-like lake extending 5.6 square kilometers. As
the sun rises, the glittering gold-silver water meets the purple-blue
sky of the distant misty mountains. It is a good time to jog or bike
on the Bai Causeway and Su Causeway-two emerald ribbons across the
lake, one from east to west and the other from north to south. On
the way, one meets the Solitary Hill, which is regarded as a ¡°green
crown of the lake¡±. En route are three other isles, Three Pools Mirroring
the Moon, Mid-Lake Pavilion and Ruan Yuan¡¯s Mound, forming a true
fairyland. The lake is garlanded
by miles of lush gardens and beauty is singing out wherever one looks.
West Lake is for all seasons: In
spring, fresh willow buds swing over the pink peach blossoms as colorful
birds brighten the meadowlands with sweet songs and children¡¯s
laughter ringing from distant play.
In summer, miles of lotus flowers
dance in the breeze as the sunset glow fringes the clouds. And a distant
view of mountain summits and the crowns of metasequoia trees consummate
the picture.
