			Back in the 1880’s, a big red-bearded man came to call one day on the French Minister of Education. Meaning:One day in the 1880’s a big of man with red beard came to visit the French Minister of Education. 那还是在十九世纪八十年代，一天，一个蓄着大胡子的大个子拜访了法国教育部长。 call on/upon (v) : 1. formally invite or request sb 郑重邀请某人或要求某人 1. I now call upon the chairman to address the meeting. 现在请主席致词。 2. Then the teacher called on me to answer the question. 这使老师教我回答这个问题。 2. appeal to or urge sb (to do sth) 恳求或促使某人（做某事） 1. Then they would call on us to help. 这使他们就会找我们去帮忙。 2. I feel called upon to warn you that you should do it like this. 我觉得我应该提醒你这样做这件事。 The receptionist looked at the card and his face lighted up. The priest prayed for the dying man. 牧师为死者做祷告。 2. They prayed to God for an end to their sufferings. 他们为早日结束苦难而祈祷。
