他们惊诧山路的蜿蜒曲折。
(v.): go in a zigzag 曲折地前进
1. We zigzagged up the hill. 我们曲曲折折爬上小山。
2. The narrow path zigzags up the cliff. 这条狭窄的小径曲曲折折地向峭壁延伸。
At a second angle in the road was a large flat rock, jutting out northward, overlooking the deep valley from which the road ascended.
Meaning: The large flat rock stands at a second angle in the road, it stuck out northward, looked down at the deep valley from which the road went up.
注:这是一个倒装句,句子的主语是“the large flat rock”。
接下来的那个拐角处矗立着一块巨大而平坦的岩石。它向北突出,俯瞰着整个山谷。前面提到的那条大道就是经由这个山谷通向山上的。
to jut out:
to be in a position further forward than its surrounding; stick out 突出;伸出

overlook (v.):
to have or give a view of (something or someone) from above 俯瞰,俯视

ascend (v.): to go up 渐渐上升,升高
1. The narrow path started to ascend more steeply at the rocky side.
狭窄的道路在多岩石的一面陡然上升。
2. We watched the mists ascending from the valley below.
