courtesy(n.): polite behavior, good manners 礼貌,客气
Comparing the following words:
courtesy, amenity, attention, gallantry
都有让人愉快的,社交场合的礼节,礼貌的意思。
courtesy(n.): polite behavior, good manners 礼貌,客气。指为别人考虑或对别人表示尊敬,含有教养很好、很体面或天生的温文有理的意思。
1. They didn’t even have the courtesy to apologize.
他们也不道个歉,真没有礼貌。
2. It would only have been common courtesy to say thank you. 说声谢谢不过是普通的礼貌。
amenity(n.): pleasantness 指城镇、宾馆等地方的舒适、让人愉快。可以引申为很适宜的,有礼貌的举止行为。它不仅可以适用于人的言谈、举止,还可以适用于指让人们和睦亲善的追求、兴趣等。
1. He immediately noticed the amenity of his new surroundings.
他立刻觉察到了新环境的宜人之处。
2.The amenities completed, the guest put down his drink.
一番客套寒暄之后,来客搁下手中的饮料。
attention(n.): kind or thoughtful act
厚待,殷勤,尤其是求婚者或求爱者所表现出的殷勤。
1. He is paying his attentions to a lady. 他正向一女子求爱。
2. A suitor’s attentions to a woman are ardent.
求婚者对女子的殷勤是热烈的。
gallantry(n.): special attentiveness (of a man) to a woman;bravery
特指对女子的殷勤、尊崇,还含有豪侠、勇敢的意思。
1. He won many hearts by his gallantry. 他以殷勤热情赢得芳心无数。
2. He is rewarded a medal for gallantry. 他获得一枚英勇勋章。
By conscience and courage, devotion and daring, he soon commended himself to his fellows and his officers; and it was to these qualities and to some knowledge of the country that he owed his selection for his present duty at the extreme outpost.
Meaning: Because he was conscientious, devoted and very brave, he soon won the liking of his fellows soldiers and his officers; he was selected to take up the critical task because of those fine qualities he possessed and his knowing of the surroundings.
由于正直、勇敢、全力以赴、英勇顽强,他很快便赢得战友和上司的好评。正是因为他具备这些品质,并且熟悉此地地形地势,所以才被挑选来担任最前沿站岗放哨的任务。
