Comparative and superlative adjectives can stand without nouns, if their nouns appear or are implied in the general context.
如果形容词的比较级和最高级所修饰的名词在上下文中出现或提到, 这时形容词的比较级和最高级可不带名词单独使用。

2. They grow several kinds of apples on the farm. The sweetest comes from the oldest trees.
When it is not clear what you are talking about, you can follow the + comparative / superlative adjective construction with of + a noun group which refers to the things compared.
当你对所谈论的事情不是十分清楚时,你可以使用定冠词+形容词的比较级和最高级的结构并带有of + 一个名词词组用来指代比较的事物。
1. Tom was the more intelligent of the two.
2. They are often too poor to buy even the cheapest of meat.
3. Some of his friends thought he was not the best of writers.
