He had lost all that dreamy vagueness and indecision. Now he had the air of a man who has found his place in life.
Meaning: Six years ago the man might be much younger and full of dreams. Therefore he was not clear about his aim in life and unable to make his decisions on important occasions. Now he appears quite a different man, for he seems to have discovered what he should do in life.(He is obviously a well-traveled business man.)

Comparing the following words:
break, interrupt, pause, rest, stop
这几个词是动词，都有 “ 停顿 ” 的意思。
break 意思是 “ 中止 ”，“ 使中断 ”，多指不好的事情。
1. The noise of the storm broke my rest. 暴风雨的呼啸使我无法入睡。
2. The railway communication is broken. 铁路交通中断了。
interrupt 指打断或打扰而使某项活动暂时停止。
1. Trade between the two countries was interrupted by the war.
两国之间的贸易因战争而中断。
2. It’s not polite to interrupt other’s conversation.
打断别人的谈话是不礼貌的。
pause 表示暂时的停顿，然后还要继续进行。
1. He paused and then went on reading his novel.
他停了片刻之后，又继续读他的小说。
2. He paused upon the threshold to survey the room.
他在门槛上停了停，把屋里打量一番。
rest 指停止活动或工作，尤指休息。
1. He stopped to rest his horse. 他停下来让马休息一下。
2. The dark glasses rested my eyes. 这副墨镜让我的眼睛感到舒服。
stop 是普通动词，指突然停止或中止某个行动。
1. We stopped talking when our teacher came in. 老师进来时，我们都停止了说话。
2. The car stopped here. 车停在这儿。
“You’ve really been to Russia?”
Meaning: Vera is surprised that something she had longed to do --- to travel to Russia --- is something the man has already done. Indeed, he lived there for over a year. 你真的去了俄罗斯？
