Meaning: organization of scholars

Comparing the following words:
learned, cultured, polished, well-bred
learned (adj) : having much knowledge acquired by study
意思是 “有学问的;博学的”,形容人通过学习而获得了丰厚的知识。
1.His friends are all learned.
他的朋友都是有学问的。
2. He looks learned.
他看似有学问的样子。
cultured (adj) : refined understanding and appreciation of sth
指人在文学、艺术等方面的教养使人显得比较文雅。
1. She is a well-read and cultured woman.
她是一个博览群书,颇为文雅的女人。
2. She is a beautiful, cultured girl.
她是一个美丽、有文化的女孩。
polished (adj) : additional quality of fineness
意思是 “优美的;文雅的;洗炼的” 修饰一个人通过教育,自身修养而变得文雅或优美,可形容事物。
1. Jack has polished manners.
杰克有着优雅的风度。
2. The performance last night was really a polished one.
昨晚的演出真是太优美了。
well-bred (adj) : having or showing good manners 强调人 “有礼貌;有教养”
1. She was too well-bred to show her disappointment.
她很有涵养,遇到失望的事亦不行于色。
2. He is a well-bred young man.
他是个很有教养的年轻人。
Mathematicians spent weeks checking his figures.
Meaning: Mathematicians spent weeks examining whether the numbers used in books were accurate.
数学家们花费几周的时间来核实他的数字。
check (v) : to examining so as to determine accuracy.检查;核对
