Meaning: Jules Verne had imagined some wonders in his novels.The task of modern science was merely actions to prove whether those wonders were satisfactory or not.
现代科学只不过是把凡尔纳文字的想象在实践中实验的过程。
work out : develop in a specified way; turn out
按某种方式发展;结果
1. How will things work out? 事情将成什么样子?
2. Things worked out quiet well. 事情的结果很不错。
envision (v) : picture in the mind as a future possibility
想象;预想;展望
1. I can’t envision him doing such a terrible thing.
我不敢想象他能做出这种可怕的是。
2. The mother is envisioning her child as a prince.
母亲想象她的孩子是个王子。
Verne, who lived to see many of his fancies come true, was matter-of-fact about it all.
Meaning: Though he had witness many of his dreams come true, he took a plain view of it instead of showing any sign of excitement.
凡尔纳目睹了他的很多想象成为现实,但他对此却实事求是。
matter-of-fact (adj) : connected with fact, not imagination.
注意事实;讲究事实
1. The newspaper gave a matter-of-fact account of the murder trail.
报纸对这起凶杀案的审理作了客观的评论。
2. She told us the news in a very matter-of-fact way.
她把那消息实事求是的告诉了我们。
… his mother was descended from one of the great families of France.
Meaning: … his mother was a daughter of one of the noble families of France.
他的母亲是法国一个贵族家庭的女儿。
descend from: have its roots in, originate from
(指财产、起质、权力)从某人处继承、传下、遗传
1.The title descends to me from royalty. 这个头衔是由我父亲传给我的。
2. Are men descended from apes? 人是由猿演变而来的吗?
The first railroad was only five years old.
Meaning: The first railroad had only five years of history.
铁路仅仅诞生五年。
