blurted out: speak out suddenly without thinking 脱口而出
1.You should not blurt out what is in mind.
你不要想什么就说什么。
2. He blurted out the bad news, before I could stop him.
我还没来得及阻止他,他就已脱口说出了这个坏消息。
You could have knocked Jules over with a breakstick.
Meaning: you could have hit him down with a slight push.
你当时用面包当棍子就可以把儒勒打倒。
knock sb over: strike sb down 撞倒某人
1. You’ve knocked over my drink.
你把我的饮料打翻了。
2. The old man was knocked over by a car while he was across the street.
那个老人在过街时被汽车撞倒。
confirm (v) : provide evidence for the truth 证实;证明;确认
1.The rumours of an attack were later confirmed.
发动攻击的谣传后来得到了证实。
2. The announcement confirmed my suspicions.
这项通告证明了我的猜测属实。
Jules, urged on by the older man, made up his mind he would do for geography what Dumas had done for history.
Meaning: Pushed by Dumas, Jules determined to write something about geography as Dumas had written novels in the field of history.
儒勒在这位长老的敦促下,下定决心向大仲马选定历史题材写小说一样,他要写地理题材的小说。
His father,impatient with the boy’s neglect for his studies, cut off his allowance.
Meaning: His father could not put up with Verne for paying no attention to his studies, and did not sent the money to him any more.
由于父亲不能容忍他忽略学业,便中断了他的津贴。
Comparing the following words:
neglect, ignore, disregard. overlook
neglect (v): playing little or no attention to
为普通用语,指对职责、义务或应做的事等没有给予足够重视,这种忘记可能是有意的,也可能是无意的。
1. It won’t do to neglect this work. 忽视这项工作是不行的。
2. I’m sorry we have been neglecting our duty.
我很遗憾,我们疏忽了我们的职责。
ignore (v) : take no notice of sb/sth
指 “疏忽”、“不顾”,强调对某人或某物故意不理会,有时还带有固执的拒绝的意味。
1. The teacher ignored my difficult question.
老师对我的难题置之不理。
2. I can’t ignore his rudeness any longer.
他粗暴无礼,我再也不能不闻不问了。
disregard (v) : pay no attention to
指经过仔细认真、完全自觉的思考后而不予理会或注意,通常为故意地、部分的不理会或忽视。
1. They always disregard my suggestion.
他们总是无视我的建议。
2. If you disregard policeman’s instructions they may arrest you.
如果你对警察的指令置之不理,他们可能会抓你。
overlook (v) :take no notice of sb/sth
指由于匆忙、仓促、粗心等原因而不知不觉地忽略了注意的事物或细节。这种忽略在性质上不严重,情节轻微。也可指宽怒他人过错的一个有意识的决定。
1. I will overlook your this time. But just this once.
这次我宽怒你的过失,但下不为例。
2. She overlooked the fact that the front door was not locked.
她忽略了前门没有上锁的事实。
allowance (n) : money given regularly for a specific purpose 津贴、补助
1. The travel allowance covers hotel and restaurant bills.
补助包括旅店和餐馆的费用。
2. I don’t receive any allowance from my father.
我没有收到父亲给的零用钱。
