lay off: to discontinue work or activity 停止工作;休息
1.He told me to lay off for a week. 他要我休息一个星期。
2.She is laid off. 她被解雇了。
... I do not think we would have done it, even then, had not one of the men had the presence of mind to put a handkerchief over his nose, and to light a bit of brown paper.
Meaning: I do not think we could have stopped the horse if one of the men had no been calm and wise enough to put a handkerchief over his nose and to light a bit of brown paper to counteract the odour of the cheeses.
在我看来,若不是他们其中一人能够临危不乱,用手帕捂住它的鼻子,有燃起草纸抵销奶酪的气味,他们根本止不住它。
to fall back : to retreat; to move or turn back撤退
1. The enemy had to fall back. 敌人不得不撤退。
2.They fell back on the right side. 他们撤向右边。
to fall back on :to turn for support 求助于;依靠
1.He usually falls back on her help. 他经常求助她帮忙。
2.It is useless to simply fall back on others. 只靠别人是没有用处的。
“Very close in here.”
Meaning: “It is quite stuffy here.”
“这儿的空气真闷”。
“Quite oppressive,”
Meaning:It is difficult to breathe since the air has a strange smell.
“闷得令人难受。”
oppressive: (adj.)

1)unjust 不公平的;压迫的
1.They can not bear the oppressive treatment.
他们不能容忍这种不公平的待遇。
2.They went on strike against the oppressive regulation.
他们罢工以示他们对这不公平的规则的反抗。
2)hard to endure 难以忍受的; 压制的
1.The oppressive whether bothers me.
这种压抑的天气使我心烦。
2. The oppressive heat makes people dazzling.
难以忍受的闷热使人头晕目眩。

Meaning: …it made him remind of a dead baby…

to put sb. in mind of sth. : to remind sb. of sth.

1.This old picture puts me in mind of my childhood.

2.She put me in mind of my elder sister.
