to determine : (v.)
1) to decide on 决定
1.He has determined the date for his wedding. 他已决定了结婚的日期。
2.The date for the meeting has not been determined. 开会日期还没决定。
2) to find out precisely 明确地找出;测定
1.Doctors have not determined the cause of this disease.
医生还没有找出引发这种疾病的原因。
2.He determined his location by using a compass. 他通过指南针来确定方向。
3)to make up one’s mind 下决心
1.We determined on an early start. 我们决定早些动身。
2.He determined to learn Greek. 他决心学希腊语。
to get rid of :to be free of 摆脱;解脱
1.We were glad to get rid of our overcoats. 我们很高兴脱掉了外套。
2.These shoes are difficult to get rid of. 这些鞋子很难卖掉。
to fish out:to draw or pull 拖出;捞出
1.He fished out a coin out of his pocket. 他从兜里掏出一个硬币。
2.She fished out her cloth from the river. 她把衣服从河里捞出来。
He said it was a plot to deprive him of his living by waking up the corpses.
Meaning: He said it was a secret plan to wake up the corpses with the odour of the cheeses, and as a result he would be unemployed.

deprive: (v.) to take away from 剥夺
1. Trees deprive the house of the light. 树遮住了房子的光线。
2. They were deprived of the right of election. 他们被剥夺了选举权。
deprivation: (n.) depriving or being deprived 夺去,剥夺
1.The deprivation of his citizenship shocked him.
被剥夺公民权这一做法令他很吃惊。
2. The deprivation of children’s education is not right.
剥夺孩子受教育的做法是不正确的。
Comparison: living, alive, live.
living: (adj.) alive,esp. now existent 活着的;(尤指)现存的 着重指没有死的状态,即现存的人或事物,可作表语或定语。
1.Biology is the study of living things.
生物学是研究生物的科学。
2.My grandfather is still living at the age of 93.
alive: living,(esp. having the possibility of dying but still existent) 活着的;在世的 (多用于人,强调虽有死的可能,但仍活着,通常作表语,作定语时一般后置。)
1.It’s great to be alive. 活着就是好。
2.Who is the greatest man alive? 当今最伟大的人物是谁?
live: (adj.) having life 有生命的;活的
指肉体的出现而不是相片,画像;或人死后还在人们心中的“活着”;指物时 ,表示“有生命的,有活力的”;还可表示向场转播(电视,广播)
1.There is much live fish in the market every day.
每天都有许多活鱼上市。
2.Some television and radio programs are live.
有些电视和广告节目是实况转播的。
