dispel (v.): drive away; cause to vanish
驱走(某事物);使消失

alive to: completely aware of 完全清楚;意识到
1. He was alive to the dangers of the work. 他完全清楚工作的危险性。

Meaning: He aimed his rifle at the deadly spot on the horseman’s breast. He would certainly kill the man if fired.

cover (v.): keep aiming a gun at sb.(用枪炮)瞄准某人

2. Cover her while I phone the police. 你用枪看住她,我给警察打电话。
A touch upon the trigger and all would have been well with Carter Druse.
Meaning: If he had pressed the trigger and killed the horseman, he would have fulfilled his duty and for the time being he wouldn’t have been tortured by the guilty conscience because he didn’t know at the point the horseman was his own father.

Meaning: Carter Druse became stunned when he found the horseman turned out to be his father.

Meaning: A moment later he resumed his senses and reason became stronger than feelings. He came to realize that his father was his foe--- a big threat to his fellow soldiers. He had no other choice but to kill him so as to carry out his duty.
