Meaning:to warn him would only cause him to go rapidly to his camp.

alarm
(v.): give a warning or feeling of danger to ; frighten 警告或惊吓;使惊觉;惊动
1. Alarmed by the noise, the birds flew away. 那声音把鸟吓飞了。
2.?I don’t want to alarm you. 我不想吓着你。
…perhaps he is but admiring the landscape.
Meaning: He might be merely admiring the landscape.
…他或许只是在那里欣赏风景而已。
permit (v.): make (sth.) possible 使(事物)有可能性
1. I will come tomorrow weather permitting. 要是天气许可,明天我一定来。
2. I will come in July if my health permits. 要是健康状况好的话,我七月份来。
may well: may possibly, or probably 很可能
1. His appearance has changed so much that you may well not recognize him.
他的外貌已经变了很多,你很可能认不出他来了。
2. We may well have won the match if one of our players hadn’t been hurt.

Meaning: His fellow soldiers had exposed themselves in the open air. Seeing this Carter was sure that the horseman, high above on the rock, had discovered them. Druse withdrew his eyes from the valley and fixed them again upon the man and horse in the sky.
Meaning: When observed from lower position, the man and the horse, being high on the cliff, looked as if in the sky. Druse didn’t look at the valley and aimed to them again.
