beachcomber(n.): one who holds no regular job and makes a poor living by whatever can be found on the beach or the waterfront.

It’s an old-fashioned shop, crowded with stuff not usually found in barber shops…Harry himself, for instance..
Meaning: This shop doesn’t look like a barber shop since it is full of things which don’t belong to a barber. Even Harry himself doesn’t look like a barber. 这是一家老式理发店,里面满是当前理发店已不常见的物件。哈里本人就与理发店不相称。
stuff (n.):
1) material of which sth is made 原料;材料
1. What stuff is this jacket made of? 这件夹克是用什么料子做的?
2. A kind of plastic stuff is used to make the plates.
这些盘子是用一种塑料制造的。
2) unnamed things, belongings, activities, subject-matter, etc.
东西、活动、财物、活动、题材等
1. Leave your stuff in the hall. 把你的东西放在门厅里。
2. This book is really boring stuff. 这本书真是枯燥无味。
由“stuff”构成的习语:
a bit of stuff: 漂亮的女子
do one’s stuff: 显身手
hot stuff: 第一流的人或事物
know one’s stuff: 了解本行;精通业务
that’s the stuff: 这就对了;这才是需要的
for instance: by way of example or illustration 例如
1. There are jobs more dangerous than truck driving; for instance, training lions.
有许多工作比开车更危险;比如驯狮。
2. Several of his friends came: Ben, Carol and Mike, for instance.
他的几个朋友来了,比如本、卡罗尔、麦克。
He has never been known to put on a barber’s white jacket or to work without a hat of some sort on his head.
Meaning: He is unusual because people have never seen him in a barber’s white jacket and he always works with a hat of some sort on his head.
人们从未见过他穿上理发师应备的白色罩衫。 工作时他头上的帽子从未见摘过。

1. He is known to have been put in prison once.
人们都知道他曾进过监狱。
2. The writer was known to have produced three novels last
