“Yes, I am afraid I must,” she said, and managed a smile.
Meaning: For reasons she doesn’t entirely understand herself. She brings her discussion with her former companion to an end. She actually doesn’t have a good reason to end the relationship.
“ 是的，我必须要走了，” 她说着勉强笑了一下。
turned into “ 使变成，使成为 ”
同义短语：to change so as to become (something bad)
1. Water turns into ice when it freezes. 水遇冷结冰。
2. She turned her old dress into a skirt.
她把她的旧衣服改成了一条裙子。
did die down. （渐渐地，她的气）全消了。
在该句中助动词did 起到加强语气的作用。根据主语的形式动词do 可变成does, did 三种形式。
1. I do think you should go. 我的确认为你应当去。
2. He did tell me that he would help us in the work.
他真的告诉过我他要帮助我们做这项工作。
