Meaning: … while they still hold tightly the outdated concepts of the nation-state, but they are indifferent to what the present complicated world needs. 然而人们却置当今世界复杂的要求而不顾，使主权国家的观念仍置根于陈腐的观念之中。 bring about : cause sth to change direction 使（某物）改变方向 1. The boat was brought about by the wind. 由于风的作用使船改变了方向。 2. The bus driver brought us about. 客车司机把我们的车掉过头来。 cause sth to happen 使发生； 实现；引起 1. What brought about her illness? 她的病是怎么引起的？ 2. This brought about a change in the balance of force. 这使力量对比发生了变化。 These proponents of the multinational corporations come by and large from the business world. There are however, many critics among academic students of multinational corporations who regard them as a sinister force. Meaning: On the whole, people from business world support multinational corporations. On the other hand, academic students regard multinational corporations as evil force. 跨国公司的支持者们大多来自商界。然而许多研究跨国公司的学生在报告中视跨国公司为邪恶势力。 at the cost of : involving the loss 以牺牲某事物为代价 1. He has decided to transfer these art treasures to the state. 他已决定把这些艺术珍品交给国家。 One study actually showed that multinational corporations do not invest capital from wealthy countries, but prefer to finance their operations from the local economy. Meaning: One study reveals the fact that multinational corporation’s investment is not economic assistance. They get great benefits from local economy. The money will flow from the poor country to the rich country. 实际上一项研究表明，跨国公司非但没有从富国拿钱投资，而是倾向从当地为其生产提供资金。
