Colonial American: In the late half of the 16th century, the England started the North American colonization with the hope that the New World would yield instant and easily exploitable wealth for England. In 1607 the first permanent English settlement, Jamestown in Virginia, was established. The Plymouth colony was founded by the Pilgrim Fathers, who arrived in ˇ°the Mayflowerˇ± in 1620. Some colonists travelled to America to free themselves from religious persecution while others dreamed of getting a piece of free land or economic opportunity. They served English economy by trading solely with England.
However, the expanding colonies were growing wealthy and feeling independent. Before the American Revolution, 13 colonies had taken some measures of self-government. They fought successfully for independence from England (1775 --- 1783) and became the 13 original states of the United States of America.
