Synopsis
The train is crowded during rush hour. James Saxon is in his comfortable corner seat, with his face buried in a newspaper. Matti Arpola, a Finnish young man, is sitting opposite. He is on his first trip to England. He considers James Saxon a typical Englishman and begins to find clues to back up his judgment.
He takes note of James Saxon¡¯s look and dress, imagines his occupation and family life, and comes to the conclusion that James Saxon ¡°looks like a poorly-paid clerk or a workman.¡±
After the journey finishes, Matti is told that James Saxon is an entrepreneur with a fortune of two million pounds. Furthermore, he is a naturalized British subject of Finnish origin, not a typical Englishman. Matti feels frustrated about his too hasty conclusions.
