Text Analysis |  Summary |  Symbolic Meanings |

Catharine and Newt had been close friends since they were young. Before they realized that they loved each other, Newt joined the army and did not see Catharine for a year. A week before Catharine¡¯s wedding to Henry Stewart Chasens, Newt appeared unexpectedly. He invited Catharine out for a walk. Catharine learned that Newt was informed of her wedding by his mother and came on purpose to see her at the expense of being A.W.O.L.

Catharine couldn¡¯t refuse Newt, and they began to take a walk, one foot in front of the other, through leaves, over bridges. Several times Catharine made up her mind to end the walk, but still she found herself following Newt involuntarily. Newt did not win Catharine¡¯s love until they stopped in a large orchard.
