The essay consists of a comment on the settlement in South Dakota and a letter from a real pioneer, Mrs. Orpha Haxby. Telling the story in the first person makes the journey much more real than if the story was told in the third person. As the journey proceeds, the reader shares with the story-teller the fear of dangers and the excitement of encountering something new.
