Synopsis

Hughie Erskine was charming but not wealthy. He fell in love with Laura Merton, whose father did not agree to their engagement unless Hughie had ten thousand pounds. One morning, on the way to the Mertons, Hughie visited his good friend, the painter Alan Trevor. In his studio,Hughie met a model beggar who looked so miserable that Hughie could not help feeling compassion for him.

Even though he had only one pound and some pennies in his pocket, Hughie gave the pound to the beggar without hesitation. That night, Hughie was told by Alan Trevor that the beggar was really Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe, who had asked Alan to paint him as a beggar. Hughie was very surprised and embarrassed for what he had done to this millionaire. The next morning, in return for the pound, Baron Hausberg gave Hughie ten thousand pounds as a wedding present.
