1. What had enabled Schliemann to make so many important discoveries?

The first thing that enable him to make so many discoveries was his firm belief in the truth of Homer¡¯s epics and later his belief in a Greek history. By following Homer¡¯s advice he succeeded in finding the treasure of King Priam and by following the detailed description of a Greek history he found the graves of Agamemnon. The second thing that enabled him to succeed was his perseverance. He kept on working despite many difficulties.

2. Why do you think the writer calls Schliemann a ¡°lucky¡± archaeologist instead of a ¡°successful¡± one?

Schliemann missed the actual Troy, but he found an older city instead. His excavation did not come to anything. In addition, he found the treasure of the great King Priam just the day before he planned to give up. Therefore, he was considered a lucky archaeologist.
