我爸爸常常一边望着她，一边笑着说。

would   是情态动词, 和used to 同义, used to   表示而今已经停止的过去的习惯或存在状态。
would  常用于文学作品中，而used to常用与口语中，另外，used to   可与动态动词和状态动词连用，而would一般只能和动态动词连用。

She would rise at six every day.    她那时每天六点起床。

There used to be a bookstore at the corner of the street.
大街拐角处曾有一家书店。
