Comment on the Story

1. Were the father and mother of the narrator born Americans? How and when do you think they came to America?

No,they werenĄ¯t. They were Jews. They had been in America for 30 years, which suggested that they came to the New World about 1910. It was the time when the mass migration took place. A conclusion can be drawn that the parents used to live in eastern Europe. The persecution against people there drove them to the U.S.

2. Did the girl feel like leaving? Why or why not?

The girl did not want to leave because the family treated her like a daughter. She was happy with them and hated to break their hearts.
