Comment on the Story

Tone is the outward sign of the attitude of the author in a work of art. The narrator of the text tells his story in a sad tone. He is filled with sorrow for his family which represents the fate of all the Jewish people in World War II. They are unfairly treated although they are kind and sympathetic to the Polish girl. How can this happen? The question is what the narrator always thinks about after the girlĄ¯s departure. His puzzlement and resentment are fully shown through the title. But the girl is not to blame. She is unwilling to hurt her employers. She is also puzzled by what her mother said in the letter.
